You may have heard of the Cash Envelope System before, commonly called “cash stuffing” or “envelope budgeting”, in which case you know that the idea is to use only cash for as many expenses as you’re able. The cons of envelope budgeting are primarily that it can require a lot of cash and it means you have to carry some cash around – like the old days! But let’s be honest, it is without a doubt harder to part with cold, hard cash than it is to spend invisible/digital money attached to a credit card. So while this may be viewed as a con it could be argued that it is another benefit of using this budgeting method as it helps to curb your spending habits by forcing you to evaluate whether or not you really need to purchase certain items. Further, the pros seem to outweigh the cons if you’re struggling to get your spending under control. To point, this budgeting method can help avoid impulse purchases, help visualize where money is actually being spent, and can be a great teaching method for the “digital natives” that are our kids!
So, if you want to give it a try, here is a quick primer on how envelope budgeting works! After setting your overall budget, you then use envelopes labeled with your budget categories (groceries, gas, hobbies, subscriptions, clothes, vacations and travel, and so much more! We have pre-printed labels as well as blank ones so you can cover everything!) and put the exact amount of cash in each respective category that you budgeted for that period – usually a month at a time. Then, when it comes time to make purchases, you use the cash from the applicable envelope and track your purchases. When there is no cash in any given envelope, you know you are out of money for said budget category. So long as you have the self-discipline to not “steal” money from other envelopes and shift them to another category/envelope, then in theory you should be able to stick to your budget as you’re forced to recognize that the money is literally gone/spent for any given category. After your budget period is over, you can then set a new budget, reset your envelopes and/or add new ones, distribute funds as needed, and start over. Simple yet extremely effective!
